Introduction: Members of Engineering Heritage Newcastle, a group of the Institution of Engineers Australia, have been maintaining and demonstratingan1885 Craven Bros gantry crane, which is thought to be the only one still operating anywhere in the world in its original configuration. This paper sets out details of the crane and the trials and tribulations which have attended its operation since members have been doing the work. It started out with members just “doing” but as time went on insurance and Workplace Health and Safety issues had to be resolved, not only to allow work to continue but to ensure that the crane continues to be conserved for future generations.
